On Thursday, 18 September 2013, the READ to RISE team went to Meadowridge Primary School in Lentegeur (Mitchells Plain) to read and hand out copies of Oaky and the Sun to a class of 40 Grade 3 learners.

The Principal, Mr. Norman Daniels, introduced.the READ to RISE team to the young learners.  The Founder and Executive Director of READ to RISE, Athol Williams, who is also the author of the book, read and discussed the book with the young learners.

READ to RISE Programme Director and illustrator of Oaky and the Sun, Taryn Lock, explained to the children about the different parts of a tree and how an acorn grows to become a big Oak tree.

Each child was then given their very own copy of Oaky and the Sun to take home. The session ended with the entire class reading the story of Oaky and the Sun together in harmony.

READ to RISE visited Meadowridge Primary School on Wednesday 30 October 2013 to visit all the Grade 2 and 3 learners. Our wonderful volunteer readers, Mike, Anel, Kevin and Aaron did a fantastic job reading to the children. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child smile!
